Girls Results and Comparisons to 2010

November 6, 2011

(Update:  Now reflects the corrections to the meet results posted on Monday.)

The girls finished fifth in the state meet, scoring 170 points.  This is the fifth consecutive year of finishing seventh or higher for the girls.  Last year, the Watauga girls ran the fourth-best average time in state meet history to finish second with 115 points.  Obviously this was not quite as good, but very few teams have ever been that good.

When comparing to last year’s results, the positive things that jump out were very good races by Darby and Madison, as both got faster despite the course being slower this year.  Madison also managed to improve in place, despite the fact that 12 of the top 14 from last year were back and some extremely good people were either new or much-improved (including three of the top six.)  Most coaches agreed that this year was substantially stronger at the top.

With six of seven runners back we can compare each person to what they ran last year.  We can also compare each of the seven spots to the same place in the lineup from last year.

First three columns after name are place, change from last year for that person, and change from last year for that spot on the team.  Next three columns are the same info but for time instead of place.  Minus-sign (“-“) means the place/time was less this year, which is a good thing.

  1. Darby           2nd       +1     +1    17:42     -0:10    -0:10
  2. Madison     14th       -6     +1    18:42      -0:26    +0:03    PR!!!
  3. Hannah       40th   +27  +20    19:34      +0:55   +0:26
  4. Hailey         70th    +27  +27    20:13     +0:30   +0:30
  5. Molly          93rd   +17   +27    20:48     +0:28   +0:37
  6. Julia            97th    +31  +21   20:57      +0:46   +0:37
  7. Taylor      110th   DNR   +8     21:20        DNR    +0:19

Additional Comparisons:

  • Hailey picked up four garbages; Hannah only got two, giving Hailey a big win, but both had totals of zero last year so in terms of percentage both had an infinite improvement.
  • The girls beat the boys at four out of seven places.  However, the boys scored 16 fewer points overall.  We will call this a tie.
